I love spending time with the boys during the holidays baking goodies, decorating, and crafting. One of our favorite things to do is to make ornaments. Both of the boys have a small tree in their room and that is where they hang up their ornaments as we make them during the season. Each year when we pull out their ornaments, they remember which ones THEY made and those promptly go back to their tree. It’s a fun tradition and very special to us.
We’ve been on an ornament kick lately and I decided to make some Candy Cane Mice – they are so fun and I went a little crazy at Target in the candy cane section so we had a few extra lying around 🙂

5 SECRETS TO GETTING DINNER ON THE TABLE...FAST!
What you’ll need:
- Felt or foam
- googly eyes or black felt
- candy canes
- hot glue or craft glue
Step 1: Cut out these shapes. You’ll have an egg shape with a pointed top if you want. It gets covered up so it doesn’t really matter 🙂 An elongated number 8 and two circles. I don’t make these shapes uniform – we want each mouse to look a little different {chubby or skinny, little or big ears, etc.}
Step 2: Fold the body in half and cut two slits about two thirds of the way down. The slits need to be only big enough to slide a candy cane through.
Step 3: Fold the nose back to the first slit and cut two more slits. These slits are for the ears to slide through.
Step 4: Here you can see what the slits should look like. The green popsicle stick shows where the ears will go and the yellow is where the candy cane tail will go.
Step 5: Glue the inner ears to the outer ears and slide through the slits. Slide the candy cane through the other slits.
Step 6: This is what the under side looks like. The candy cane goes through the back slits and then through the hole that the ears make as well. This keeps the candy cane tail nice and secure.
Step 7: We did a whole bunch of mice in various colors using both felt and foam – so cute! Finally it’s time to glue on some eyes and noses. You can use tiny pom poms for the noses or just cut out another piece of felt or foam.

The boys had a lot of fun playing with the mice and hanging them up on the tree…
